What's Happening?
ABB has been awarded a contract to supply gearless mill drive (GMD) and ring-geared mill drive (RMD) technology for Harmony Gold Mining Company's Eva copper project in Queensland, Australia. The project is
expected to produce approximately 60,000 tons of copper annually over a 14-year mine life. ABB's technology will enhance the efficiency and reliability of the grinding process, which is crucial for the project's success. The contract includes the installation of a 24 MW GMD system for a semi-autogenous grinding mill and an 18 MW RMD system for a ball mill. This project is part of Harmony's strategy to diversify into copper production, complementing its traditional gold mining operations.
Why It's Important?
The contract underscores ABB's role in supporting the global energy transition by providing technology that enhances the efficiency of copper production, a critical component in renewable energy systems. As global demand for copper is projected to increase significantly, projects like Eva are essential for meeting future supply needs. ABB's involvement also highlights the importance of technological innovation in the mining sector, where efficiency and sustainability are increasingly prioritized. The successful implementation of this project could strengthen Harmony's position in the copper market and contribute to the broader goal of reducing carbon emissions through increased use of renewable energy technologies.
