What's Happening?
The Central Library of Rochester and Monroe County is organizing two walking tours in downtown Rochester to explore the city's industrial history. The first tour, scheduled for May 21, will cover the High Falls Historic District, highlighting how early
settlers utilized the Genesee River to power mills and factories, transforming Rochester into a booming industrial town. The second tour, titled 'Beyond Flour and Flowers: Industry in Rochester,' will take place on June 4, focusing on local industries and inventions. Both tours require registration and are sponsored by Fleet Feet.
Why It's Important?
These tours offer a unique opportunity for residents and visitors to engage with Rochester's rich industrial past, fostering a deeper understanding of the city's historical development. By highlighting the role of the Genesee River and local industries, the tours aim to educate participants about the factors that contributed to Rochester's growth. This initiative not only promotes cultural heritage but also supports local tourism and community engagement.
What's Next?
Participants interested in joining the tours must register in advance. The tours are contingent on weather conditions, and potential attendees are encouraged to check for updates. The library's Local History & Genealogy Division will continue to offer similar educational programs, enhancing public knowledge of Rochester's history.
