What's Happening?
The annual Jazz Combos Concert took place at Rugby Auditorium on February 20 and 21, featuring student musicians from the performing arts department. Under the guidance of Performing Arts Teacher Chris Sullivan, the students prepared for the concert starting
in mid-January. Each jazz combo selected and rehearsed a repertoire that highlighted different styles and featured a range of soloists. The students played a significant role in arranging the music, making decisions about style, tempo, and solos. The concert aimed to encourage students to perform with confidence, communicate effectively as small ensembles, and demonstrate growth in improvisation. Trumpeter Christian Indelicato and drummer Chloe Hsu expressed satisfaction with their performances, noting the hard work and preparation that went into the event.
Why It's Important?
The Jazz Combos Concert is an important event for student musicians as it provides a platform to showcase their talents and hard work. It emphasizes the educational value of live performance, where students can apply their learning in a real-world setting. The concert also highlights the importance of arts education in fostering creativity, teamwork, and confidence among students. By participating in such events, students gain valuable experience in performance and improvisation, which are crucial skills for aspiring musicians. The concert's success reflects the dedication of both students and educators in promoting arts education and its role in personal and academic development.
What's Next?
Looking ahead, Performing Arts Teacher Chris Sullivan plans to continue pushing the jazz combos toward deeper stylistic understanding and greater freedom in improvisation. He aims to expand the range of repertoire and provide students with more opportunities to compose and arrange their own music. Future concerts will build on the momentum gained from this event, with aspirations for even more creative and engaging performances. The focus will remain on enhancing students' musical skills and providing them with opportunities to grow as musicians.
