What's Happening?
Véronique Nichanian, the long-standing menswear designer for Hermès, presented her final collection at Paris Fashion Week, marking the end of her 37-year tenure with the luxury fashion house. The Fall-Winter 2026 show took place at the Palais Brongniart, the former Paris stock exchange, and was attended by notable figures such as Usher, Travis Scott, James McAvoy, and Chace Crawford. Nichanian's collection was characterized by its material-driven, understated style, featuring silk turtlenecks, leather trousers, and overcoats with leather patchwork and shearling linings. The collection also included archival pieces, such as a navy leather suit from 2003 and a mocha calfskin jumpsuit from 1991. Hermès has announced that Grace Wales Bonner, a London-based
designer, will succeed Nichanian, becoming the first Black woman to lead a major fashion house.
Why It's Important?
Nichanian's departure marks a significant transition for Hermès, a brand known for its timeless and understated luxury. Her influence over nearly four decades has shaped the brand's menswear identity, emphasizing quality materials and classic design. The appointment of Grace Wales Bonner as her successor is notable not only for her design credentials but also for the diversity she brings to the leadership of a major fashion house. This change reflects broader industry trends towards inclusivity and innovation. The transition may impact Hermès' market positioning and influence future menswear trends, as Wales Bonner is known for her unique blend of cultural references and contemporary aesthetics.
What's Next?
Grace Wales Bonner is set to present her first collection for Hermès in January next year. Her appointment is expected to bring a fresh perspective to the brand's menswear line, potentially attracting a new audience while maintaining the brand's core values of luxury and craftsmanship. Nichanian will continue to contribute to Hermès by overseeing men's accessories and silk, ensuring continuity in these areas. The fashion industry will be closely watching how Wales Bonner's vision aligns with Hermès' heritage and how it influences the brand's future collections.
