Virginia has seen a significant increase in commercial electricity sales, driven by the proliferation of data centers. Between 2019 and 2025, electricity sales in the state rose by nearly 30 million megawatthours, a growth rate surpassed only by Texas.
This surge is attributed to the high concentration of data centers in Virginia, which benefits from robust fiber optic connectivity and available land. The regional transmission organization, PJM Interconnection, forecasts that Virginia will experience the largest increase in summer peak demand from 2026 to 2030 due to this data center expansion.
