What's Happening?
Love Costa Mesa, a nonprofit organization, has initiated a pilot home-sharing program in Orange County aimed at addressing the affordable housing crisis. The program connects homeowners with extra space with individuals seeking affordable rent, who in return,
assist with household chores. This initiative, led by Betsy Densmore and Sharon Hurd, seeks to provide a mutually beneficial arrangement for both parties. The program has attracted about 20 applicants looking for affordable housing, but finding willing homeowners remains a challenge.
Why It's Important?
The home-sharing program represents an innovative approach to tackling the affordable housing shortage in Southern California, where housing costs are notoriously high. By utilizing existing housing resources, the initiative could provide a sustainable solution for both homeowners and renters. This model not only offers financial relief but also fosters community connections and support systems, particularly for older adults wishing to age in place. If successful, this program could serve as a model for other communities facing similar housing challenges.
