What's Happening?
The International Airlines Group (IAG) has entered into a licensing agreement with CFM International, designating Iberia Maintenance as a Leap Premier MRO shop. This agreement covers the Leap-1A and Leap-1B engines, which power the Airbus A320neo and Boeing
737 MAX, respectively. Iberia Maintenance plans to induct its first Leap engine in early 2027, initially supporting European operators, including IAG member airlines, before expanding globally. As a Leap Premier member, Iberia Maintenance will gain access to proprietary overhaul and repair technology, along with training and support from CFM. The Leap engine fleet is rapidly growing, with over 4,600 engines currently in operation and more than 8,600 on order.
Why It's Important?
This agreement is significant as it enhances the maintenance capabilities for Leap engines, which are increasingly prevalent in the aviation industry. By expanding its MRO network, CFM International is fostering competition and innovation in engine maintenance, potentially reducing costs and improving service quality for airlines. The growth of the Leap engine fleet underscores the demand for efficient and reliable aircraft propulsion systems, which are crucial for the operational success of airlines globally. This development may also influence the strategic decisions of airlines regarding fleet composition and maintenance partnerships.
What's Next?
Iberia Maintenance will begin servicing Leap engines in 2027, initially focusing on European operators. As the Leap engine fleet continues to expand, the demand for maintenance services is expected to rise, potentially leading to further agreements and expansions within the MRO network. Airlines and maintenance providers will likely monitor the performance and cost-effectiveness of these services closely, influencing future partnerships and investments in engine technology.
