What's Happening?
The city council of Castlegar has approved a temporary use permit (TUP) for Kootenay Beds, a furniture manufacturing company currently based in the Slocan Valley, to relocate to a former building supply
site on Sixth Avenue. This permit allows the company to conduct industrial-light activities for a three-year term, providing a trial period before a permanent zoning amendment is considered. The decision was made during a city council meeting on January 12, where city planner Sarah Martin explained that the permit aligns with the goals of the Official Community Plan. The site, previously occupied by Arrow Building Supplies, will house an office, woodworking shop, finishing area, and lumber storage. The move is part of Kootenay Beds' expansion efforts, as the company has outgrown its current location. The business, which primarily operates through online sales, may also add a small showroom in the future.
Why It's Important?
The relocation and expansion of Kootenay Beds to Castlegar is significant for several reasons. It represents a boost to the local economy by potentially increasing employment from two to eight positions. The move also supports the city's goal of fostering local business growth and diversification. By allowing a temporary use permit, the city provides a flexible framework for businesses to test new locations and operations without immediate long-term commitments. This approach can attract more businesses to the area, contributing to economic development and community vitality. Additionally, the decision reflects a supportive stance towards small-scale, artisanal manufacturing, which can enhance the region's reputation as a hub for craftsman industries.
What's Next?
Following the approval of the temporary use permit, Kootenay Beds must submit a complete building permit application for tenant improvements to ensure compliance with the B.C. Building Code. The city will notify property owners and tenants within 100 meters of the site about the development, as per the city's procedures. If the trial period is successful, the company may seek a permanent zoning amendment to continue operations. The expansion could lead to further business growth and community integration, potentially encouraging other businesses to consider similar relocations to Castlegar.
