Nornickel, the world's largest producer of palladium, is working on a new project to develop a palladium-based catalyst for lithium-sulphur (Li-S) batteries. This initiative aims to extend the lifespan
of these batteries to over 1,000 charging cycles, potentially making them a viable alternative to the lithium-ion batteries currently dominating the electric vehicle (EV) market. The company plans to complete this development within three years. Nornickel's vice president, Vitaly Busko, highlighted the promising energy density and cost benefits of Li-S technologies, which could significantly enhance driving range and reduce costs. The company has also opened a palladium laboratory in Moscow to explore new applications for palladium beyond its current use in autocatalysts for non-electric vehicles.

This development is significant as it could open up new markets for palladium, potentially increasing demand by at least 1.5 million ounces annually. As the EV market grows, the demand for efficient and cost-effective battery solutions becomes critical.
