What's Happening?
Steve Bowman, the founding drummer of Counting Crows, is hosting an Appalachian Percussion Workshop at the Jacksonville Community Center in Oregon. The workshop, limited to six participants, offers a hands-on, interactive experience where attendees can
learn to play traditional Appalachian percussion instruments such as the washboard, spoons, and cajon. The class aims to teach participants how to create music using everyday items, reflecting the historical roots of American music. Bowman, who has over 30 years of experience in the music industry, recently moved to Southern Oregon and is actively involved in teaching and supporting musical causes.
Why It's Important?
This workshop highlights the cultural significance of Appalachian music and its influence on American musical traditions. By teaching participants to use simple, everyday items as instruments, the workshop preserves and promotes the accessibility and creativity inherent in folk music. Steve Bowman's involvement brings attention to the rich musical heritage of the Appalachians and encourages community engagement through music. Additionally, such workshops can foster a deeper appreciation for traditional music forms and inspire new generations to explore and sustain these cultural practices.
