MLS NEXT and MLS NEXT Pro serve as developmental leagues, akin to the NBA's G League, providing a clear progression from youth academies to professional teams. This system has already seen significant success, with over 250 players advancing to MLS first-team contracts since the launch of MLS NEXT Pro in 2022. The leagues include 29 MLS academy teams and 238 elite academies, offering a comprehensive platform for player development.
