What's Happening?
The Sustainable Agriculture Initiative (SAI) Platform is advancing its efforts in regenerative agriculture to help food and farming organizations build more resilient and sustainable supply chains. Based in Switzerland, SAI Platform unites over 190 members
from the global food and beverage industry, including agricultural cooperatives, dairy processors, manufacturers, and consumer brands. The organization emphasizes regenerative agriculture as a crucial tool for improving soil health, supporting biodiversity, enhancing water management, and aiding farmers in adapting to climate-related challenges. The Regenerating Together Programme, developed by SAI Platform, offers a common framework for defining, measuring, and implementing regenerative agriculture practices. This program includes a global framework, outcome assessment tools, reporting processes, and implementation guidance adaptable to local farming conditions. The initiative has been shaped with input from industry members, academics, non-profit organizations, and sustainability specialists, aiming to provide consistency across supply chains while allowing regional flexibility.
Why It's Important?
The expansion of the regenerative agriculture framework by SAI Platform is significant as it addresses the growing need for sustainable food production methods amid climate change and environmental degradation. By promoting practices that improve soil health and biodiversity, the initiative supports long-term agricultural productivity and resilience. This framework is particularly important for food manufacturers, agricultural cooperatives, and retailers seeking to establish more sustainable supply chains. The program's benchmarking process, which compares third-party sustainability schemes against the Regenerating Together framework, aims to enhance transparency and reduce administrative burdens for participants. As the food industry increasingly prioritizes environmental outcomes, the adoption of regenerative agriculture practices could lead to more sustainable sourcing strategies and improved environmental impacts globally.
What's Next?
The next phase of the Regenerating Together Programme is set to launch at SAI Platform's annual event in Saskatoon, Canada, later this month. This phase will likely focus on expanding the adoption of regenerative agriculture practices across the sector. With 40 food and agriculture organizations having already signed a shared declaration of intent to accelerate the adoption of these practices, the initiative is poised to gain further momentum. As the program progresses, it will be crucial to monitor its impact on supply chain sustainability and environmental outcomes. Stakeholders, including farmers, food companies, and sustainability advocates, will likely continue to engage with the framework to refine and enhance its implementation.
