What's Happening?
Sateliot, a Barcelona-based company, has initiated a Series C financing round to raise €100 million ($117 million) to support the deployment of its IoT-focused 5G satellite constellation. The company aims to secure a lead investor and expects to receive
up to 50% public co-financing through a match-funding framework. The funds will primarily be used to deploy 16 low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellites, completing what Sateliot refers to as the 'IoT use case' and demonstrating 5G New Radio technology. Sateliot has already launched six satellites and plans to launch five more within the year.
Why It's Important?
The expansion of Sateliot's satellite constellation is significant for the advancement of global IoT connectivity, particularly in remote areas where traditional infrastructure is lacking. By enhancing 5G capabilities through satellite technology, Sateliot aims to provide comprehensive coverage that could benefit industries reliant on IoT, such as agriculture, logistics, and environmental monitoring. This development could position Sateliot as a key player in the burgeoning space-based 5G market, potentially influencing global telecommunications strategies and fostering innovation in IoT applications.
What's Next?
Sateliot's success in securing the necessary funding will be crucial for the timely deployment of its planned satellites. The company will likely focus on attracting strategic investors who can provide not only capital but also industry expertise and partnerships. As the deployment progresses, Sateliot may face competition from other companies in the space-based 5G sector, necessitating strategic collaborations and technological advancements to maintain a competitive edge.
