What's Happening?
Stockholm-based textile recycling company Syre is expanding its partnership with Target to increase the use of textile-to-textile recycled polyester in apparel and home products. This collaboration builds on a relationship established last June, with Target as one
of Syre's launch partners. The initiative aims to support the integration of recycled polyester made from end-of-life textiles into high-volume categories across Target's business. The companies expect this effort to support 70,000 metric tons of recycled polyester over time, with broader product integration planned by 2030.
Why It's Important?
The expansion of Syre and Target's partnership represents a significant step towards sustainable practices in the textile industry. By increasing the use of recycled polyester, the initiative supports environmental goals and aligns with Target's broader sourcing and supply chain strategy, known as 'Target Forward.' This strategy emphasizes a sustainable, inclusive supply chain and aims to leverage Target's scale to advance business and environmental objectives. The partnership highlights the growing importance of circular textile solutions and the role of major retailers in driving sustainability in the fashion industry.
What's Next?
As Syre and Target work towards their 2030 goals, the partnership is expected to influence other retailers and brands to adopt similar sustainable practices. The construction of Syre's first large-scale recycling facility in Southeast Asia, planned to begin in 2027, will be a critical development in scaling up the production of recycled polyester. The success of this initiative could lead to increased demand for recycled materials and further collaborations between recycling companies and major retailers, ultimately contributing to a more sustainable textile industry.
