What's Happening?
Intrepid Travel has announced the opening of a new country office in Rome, Italy, marking its 32nd office globally. This expansion is part of Intrepid's strategy to enhance its destination management network in response to increasing demand for culturally
immersive and responsible travel experiences in Italy. The new office aims to support Intrepid's operations across Italy, a top-performing destination for the company, where bookings have surged by 93% from 2022 to 2025. The opening event in Rome was attended by Intrepid CEO James Thornton, EMEA Managing Director Zina Bencheikh, and other industry leaders. The Rome office is expected to help Intrepid triple its passenger numbers by 2030, aligning with its broader strategy to expand its network of locally managed destination management companies (DMCs) and strengthen community connections.
Why It's Important?
The establishment of a new office in Rome underscores Intrepid Travel's commitment to expanding its footprint in Europe, particularly in high-demand regions like Italy. This move is significant as it addresses the challenges of overtourism by diversifying travel products and strengthening ties with local communities. By having a dedicated DMC in Rome, Intrepid can offer more authentic and sustainable travel experiences, which are increasingly sought after by travelers. This expansion not only supports local economies but also aligns with global trends towards responsible tourism. The growth in Intrepid's operations could set a precedent for other travel companies to invest in sustainable practices and community engagement, potentially reshaping the tourism industry in Europe.
What's Next?
Intrepid Travel plans to leverage its new Rome office to further develop its European portfolio, with new trips planned for 2026, including Premium Italy in Depth and Premium Walking & Hiking in the Italian Dolomites. The company aims to continue investing in local communities and enhancing its travel offerings to meet the evolving preferences of travelers. As Intrepid works towards its goal of tripling passenger numbers by 2030, it will likely focus on expanding its network of DMCs and strengthening its operational hubs in key destinations. This strategic expansion could lead to increased collaboration with local tourism partners and further innovation in sustainable travel solutions.
