What's Happening?
Selfnamed, a Charlotte-based company, has become the first no-minimums private label cosmetics company to earn B Corp certification. This certification is a significant milestone, as it places Selfnamed among businesses that meet rigorous sustainability
standards. Traditionally, ethical manufacturing has been accessible only to large beauty brands capable of ordering large quantities. Indie founders, often working from home or small online stores, have faced challenges due to high minimum order requirements and unreliable suppliers. Selfnamed offers a solution by allowing beauty founders to develop and launch products quickly, without minimum order constraints. The company has shipped over 1.5 million beauty products and supported nearly 96,000 beauty businesses, offering a catalog of over 150 natural products, many of which are ECOCERT certified.
Why It's Important?
The B Corp certification for Selfnamed is a significant development in the beauty industry, particularly for indie brands. It provides these smaller companies with access to ethical manufacturing processes that were previously reserved for larger entities. This democratization of clean beauty production can lead to increased innovation and diversity in the market, as more indie brands can compete on a level playing field. The certification also ensures that products are made to high sustainability standards, which is increasingly important to consumers. As the beauty industry continues to evolve, Selfnamed's approach could inspire other companies to adopt similar practices, potentially leading to broader changes in manufacturing standards and consumer expectations.
