The Big South Conference has announced it will become the first Division I league to sponsor women's flag football, starting in the 2027-28 academic year. This decision was approved by the league's council of chief executive officers and marks a significant
step in the sport's development. The NCAA had previously added flag football to its emerging sports for women program. Five full-time members of the Big South, including Charleston Southern and Gardner-Webb, have received support from the NFL to launch their programs. The conference plans to host its first varsity championship in the spring of 2028.
Why It's Important?
The introduction of women's flag football as a Division I sport by the Big South Conference is a landmark development in collegiate athletics. It reflects the growing popularity of flag football, which is set to debut in the 2028 Olympics. This move could inspire other conferences to follow suit, potentially leading to increased opportunities for female athletes and greater visibility for the sport. The support from the NFL underscores the sport's potential and aligns with broader efforts to promote gender equality in sports.
What's Next?
As the Big South Conference prepares to launch women's flag football, other NCAA schools may consider adding the sport to their athletic programs. The conference will work towards organizing its first varsity championship, which could set a precedent for other leagues.
