What's Happening?
Mike Downey, an Ireland-UK producer, and Emir Külal Haznevi, based in Istanbul, have launched Saudade Ink, a boutique film financing outfit aimed at developing, producing, and investing in arthouse cinema globally. The fund, supported by private investors
from Turkey and the Middle East, plans to invest up to €2 million annually over the next two years. They aim to finance five to eight productions from leading international directors each year, with some seed funding for development. Downey and Haznevi are also executive producers for Cannes Palme d’Or contenders 'Parallel Tales' by Asghar Farhadi and 'All of a Sudden' by Ryusuke Hamaguchi. This venture formalizes a long-standing collaboration between Downey and Haznevi, who have previously worked on several international projects.
Why It's Important?
The launch of Saudade Ink signifies a strategic move to bolster the arthouse cinema sector, which often struggles with funding compared to mainstream productions. By focusing on auteur-driven projects, the fund aims to support unique cinematic voices and foster cultural diversity in film. This initiative could enhance the visibility of international cinema and provide a platform for emerging filmmakers. The involvement of Downey and Haznevi, both with extensive industry experience, adds credibility and potential for successful outcomes. Their connections with high-level talent and previous successes in film festivals could attract further investments and collaborations, potentially influencing global film production trends.
What's Next?
Downey and Haznevi will be attending the Cannes Film Festival to scout for potential investments and further their involvement in the international film community. As they continue to develop their slate of projects, the focus will likely be on identifying promising scripts and directors that align with their vision for Saudade Ink. The success of their initial investments, particularly those selected for Cannes, will be crucial in establishing the fund's reputation and attracting additional investors. Future projects may also explore collaborations with other production companies and filmmakers to expand their reach and impact.
