What's Happening?
SAG-AFTRA members have approved a new four-year contract with major studios, which includes significant provisions regarding the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and a merger of the union's pension funds. The contract was ratified with 91.4% of the votes
in favor, although only 19.3% of eligible members participated in the voting. The agreement allows the use of AI performers only if they provide 'significant additional value' over live actors. This contract also includes an extra 1% contribution from studios into the combined pension plans, aiming to improve the financial stability of the union's retirement funds. Despite some opposition, union leaders argue that the merger will benefit participants in both plans.
Why It's Important?
The ratification of this contract is significant as it addresses the growing concern over the use of AI in the entertainment industry, setting a precedent for how AI can be integrated while protecting human performers. The merger of pension funds is also crucial, as it aims to secure long-term financial stability for union members. This agreement reflects a broader industry trend towards longer contract terms to ensure labor peace, especially following the disruptions caused by the 2023 strikes. The deal's approval indicates a strong commitment from both the union and studios to adapt to technological advancements while safeguarding the interests of human actors.
What's Next?
The contract's provisions will be closely monitored as the industry continues to evolve with AI technology. The union will have the opportunity to negotiate if studios begin using synthetic actors, although a strike over this issue cannot occur until 2030. The ongoing negotiations with the Directors Guild of America, whose contract expires soon, will also be pivotal, as they address similar issues of jobs, AI, and healthcare. The outcomes of these negotiations could further influence industry standards and labor relations.
