What's Happening?
Hershey has announced plans to return to the classic recipes for Reese's products starting next year. This decision follows criticism from Brad Reese, the grandson of the founder of Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, who publicly challenged the company for using
cheaper ingredients. Reese's Peanut Butter Cups have traditionally been made with real milk chocolate or dark chocolate and peanut butter. However, some products, such as mini Easter eggs, have recently been made with a coating containing less chocolate. Hershey acknowledged these changes, citing consumer demand for innovation and high cocoa prices as reasons for experimenting with less chocolate. The company plans to transition these products back to their original recipes by 2027 and will also make other changes to its sweets portfolio, including using natural colors and enhancing KitKat's recipe. Hershey aims to increase its research and development funding by 25% next year.
Why It's Important?
The decision to revert to classic recipes is significant for Hershey as it seeks to maintain consumer trust and brand integrity. Reese's Peanut Butter Cups are a flagship product for Hershey, and maintaining their quality is crucial for the company's reputation. The backlash from Brad Reese highlights the importance of ingredient transparency and consumer expectations in the food industry. By returning to the original recipes, Hershey aims to reassure consumers of its commitment to quality. This move could also influence other manufacturers facing similar pressures due to rising ingredient costs. The increased investment in research and development suggests Hershey is focusing on innovation while preserving traditional product standards.
