What's Happening?
The Sheffield-based independent publisher And Other Stories has won its second consecutive International Booker Prize with the book 'Taiwan Travelogue' by Yáng Shuāng-zǐ, translated from Mandarin Chinese by Lin King. This marks the first time a book translated from Mandarin has won the prize.
The publisher, known for its focus on translated works, previously won the prize in 2025 with 'Heart Lamp' by Banu Mushtaq. Founder Stefan Tobler expressed gratitude for the recognition and highlighted the importance of taking risks in publishing. The win allows the publisher to continue its mission of promoting diverse voices and translated literature.
Why It's Important?
The consecutive wins for And Other Stories underscore the growing recognition and importance of translated literature in the global literary scene. This success highlights the potential for small independent publishers to influence the market by championing diverse voices and stories that might otherwise be overlooked. The recognition also supports the #TranslatorsOnTheCover campaign, emphasizing the critical role of translators in bringing international works to English-speaking audiences. The financial boost from the prize allows the publisher to invest in more projects, potentially leading to a broader range of literature available to readers.
What's Next?
With the prize money and increased visibility, And Other Stories plans to expand its operations, including hiring a dedicated publishing manager and working with U.S. publicists to enhance its North American presence. The publisher aims to continue its focus on translated works, with upcoming projects including works by Brazilian author Conceição Evaristo and Palestinian author Ibtisam Azem. The success may inspire other small publishers to pursue similar paths, potentially leading to a more diverse and inclusive publishing industry.
