The Port of Baltimore reported its second-best year in 2025, continuing its recovery from the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge. Maryland Governor Wes Moore highlighted the port's handling of approximately 50 million tons of cargo, marking significant
growth since the bridge's destruction in 2024. The port ranked 10th among U.S. ports for foreign cargo value and 11th for foreign cargo tonnage. It set records for container handling and ship visits, with a 21% increase in container terminal activity over 2024. The port also excelled in roll-on/roll-off equipment handling and maintained strong performance in auto and light truck shipments.
Why It's Important?
The Port of Baltimore's performance is crucial for Maryland's economy, contributing $70 billion annually and supporting over 273,000 jobs. Its recovery and growth are vital for maintaining the state's economic strength and competitiveness. The port's achievements in cargo handling and its strategic position in the U.S. logistics network underscore its importance as a national economic asset. The ongoing improvements, including the CSX Howard Street Tunnel Project, are expected to further enhance the port's capacity and efficiency, potentially increasing its business by 160,000 containers annually and creating nearly 14,000 jobs.
What's Next?
The completion of the CSX Howard Street Tunnel Project in 2026 is anticipated to significantly boost the port's container business.
