What's Happening?
Epic Games is reportedly developing a Disney-themed extraction shooter as part of its collaboration with Disney, following a $1.5 billion investment from the entertainment giant. The game, set to release in November, features Disney characters in a new
gaming universe. Despite the ambitious project, internal feedback at Epic has been lukewarm, with concerns about the originality of the game's mechanics. Epic's senior director of global communications, Liz Markman, has stated that the internal feedback does not reflect the ambitions of the collaboration, emphasizing the creation of a new entertainment universe.
Why It's Important?
This collaboration between Epic Games and Disney represents a significant intersection of gaming and entertainment industries. The development of a Disney-themed game by Epic could potentially attract a broad audience, leveraging Disney's extensive character portfolio. However, the internal concerns about the game's originality highlight the challenges of innovating within established franchises. For Epic, this project is crucial in diversifying its offerings and addressing financial challenges, particularly following a decline in Fortnite's engagement. The success of this collaboration could influence future partnerships between gaming companies and entertainment giants.
