What's Happening?
Metso, a Finnish technology company, has been awarded major contracts to supply advanced beneficiation and dewatering equipment for the Reko Diq copper-gold project in Pakistan. The total value of these contracts is approximately €70 million, with €40 million recorded in the third quarter and €30 million in the fourth quarter of 2025. The Reko Diq mine, owned 50% by Barrick Gold and 50% by the governments of Pakistan and Balochistan, is one of the world's largest underdeveloped copper-gold areas. The project, delayed due to a dispute resolved in 2022, is expected to start production by the end of 2028. Metso's delivery includes a complete flotation flowsheet integrating TankCell and Concorde Cell technologies, along with other advanced equipment.
Why It's Important?
The development of the Reko Diq mine is significant for Pakistan's economy, which has been struggling. The mine is expected to provide a substantial boost by creating jobs and generating revenue. Metso's involvement with advanced technology could enhance the efficiency and output of the mine, potentially setting a benchmark for future mining projects in the region. The contracts also highlight Metso's role in global mining technology, reinforcing its position in the industry.
What's Next?
The Reko Diq project is set to begin production by the end of 2028, with ongoing developments expected to be closely monitored by stakeholders. The successful implementation of Metso's technology could lead to further contracts and collaborations in the mining sector. Additionally, the project's progress will be crucial for Pakistan's economic recovery and growth.
