What's Happening?
Cementation Africa has partnered with Tharisa Minerals to commence the development of an underground mine in South Africa's Bushveld Complex. This marks a significant transition from open pit to underground mining for Tharisa's chrome and platinum group
metals operation. The project aims to extend the mine's life beyond the expected depletion of open pit resources in 2034. Cementation Africa will oversee the early works, main development, and production ramp-up over the next five years. The project includes the development of three portals and the implementation of safety and governance systems necessary for underground operations.
Why It's Important?
This development is crucial for the South African mining sector as it represents a strategic shift towards sustainable mining practices. The transition to underground mining is expected to secure the long-term future of one of the country's key mining assets. It also highlights the importance of innovation and collaboration in the mining industry, as Cementation Africa brings extensive experience and technical capability to the project. The initiative is expected to enhance resource extraction and operational efficiency, potentially benefiting the local economy and workforce through skills development and job creation.
What's Next?
The project will move into a five-year main development and stoping contract following the completion of the early works phase. Cementation Africa will continue to play a leading role in supporting Tharisa's transition to underground mining, focusing on establishing robust governance and safety frameworks. The collaboration with OEM partners and the adaptation of proven technologies will be essential for the project's long-term success. The initiative also includes significant skills development and workforce mobilisation, with a focus on reskilling personnel for mechanised underground mining.
