What's Happening?
Dave Stewart, co-founder of the Eurythmics, has partnered with entrepreneurs Dominic Joseph and Rich Britton to launch Rare Entity, a venture builder aimed at transforming creator-led intellectual property (IP) into scalable businesses. This initiative seeks to reverse traditional venture capital models by ensuring that creators retain ownership and value of their IP. Rare Entity plans to develop around eight projects annually, focusing on both new IP-led concepts and accelerating existing ventures. The model emphasizes a creator-first approach, contrasting with typical platform economies where creators often lose control over their work.
Why It's Important?
Rare Entity's approach could significantly impact the creative industry by shifting power dynamics back to
creators. By allowing artists to maintain ownership of their IP, the venture could foster more innovation and creativity, potentially leading to a more diverse and rich cultural landscape. This model challenges the status quo of venture capital, which often prioritizes financial returns over creative control. If successful, Rare Entity could inspire similar models across various sectors, promoting a more equitable distribution of economic benefits within the creative economy.
What's Next?
Rare Entity aims to develop over 50 ventures in the next five to seven years, with plans to expand its portfolio across music, sports, and immersive experiences. The venture is exploring new locations for its Sonic Sphere project, an immersive audio-first experience, in cities like Chicago and Barcelona. As Rare Entity continues to grow, it may attract more creators seeking to retain control over their work, potentially leading to collaborations with major brands that align with its creator-first ethos.
