What's Happening?
The Manchester Airport Skills Hub, a collaboration between Trafford & Stockport College Group and Manchester Airports Group (MAG), has been awarded the Educate North Award for its innovative approach to workforce development. The partnership, which has evolved
over more than a decade, focuses on aligning education, recruitment, and workforce planning with real-time employer demand. Since its inception, the initiative has helped nearly 2,000 learners secure employment, many within weeks of completing their training. The Skills Hub was formally launched in 2025 and aims to address skills shortages across the airport's operational footprint, supporting over 20,000 jobs.
Why It's Important?
The recognition of the Manchester Airport Skills Hub underscores the importance of strategic partnerships in addressing workforce challenges and promoting economic growth. By aligning educational programs with industry needs, the initiative provides a model for other regions seeking to enhance employment opportunities and workforce resilience. The success of the Skills Hub highlights the potential for similar collaborations to drive social mobility and economic development, particularly in regions with significant employment hubs. This award also reinforces the role of education providers in fostering industry-relevant skills and supporting local economies.
What's Next?
Following the award, the Manchester Airport Skills Hub is likely to continue expanding its programs and partnerships to further address workforce needs. The initiative may serve as a blueprint for other airports and industries looking to develop similar models of collaboration between education and industry. As the airport completes its major infrastructure investments, including the transformation of Terminal 2 and additional investments in Terminal 3, the demand for skilled workers is expected to grow, providing further opportunities for the Skills Hub to make a significant impact.
