What's Happening?
The National Film and Sound Archive (NFSA) of Australia has added nine works to its Sounds of Australia 2026 collection, including songs by Missy Higgins and Joe Dolce. Missy Higgins' 2004 hit 'Scar' and Joe Dolce's 1980 global smash 'Shaddap You Face'
are among the selected pieces. The collection aims to capture recordings of cultural, historic, or aesthetic significance. 'Shaddap You Face' was a major hit, topping charts in the UK and Australia, while 'Scar' represents a shift towards piano-led, confessional pop in early 2000s Australia. The NFSA's selection process involves a panel of experts who consider public nominations for recordings over ten years old.
Why It's Important?
The inclusion of these songs in the NFSA highlights the cultural impact and historical significance of Australian music. By preserving these works, the archive ensures that future generations can access and appreciate the diverse musical heritage of Australia. This initiative not only honors the artists but also reflects the evolving landscape of Australian music, showcasing how it has influenced and been influenced by global trends. The recognition of these songs underscores their role in shaping national identity and cultural memory.
