Windborne Systems has released the sixth version of its AI forecasting model, WeatherMesh 6, which reportedly outperforms traditional and AI forecasts from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasting (ECMWF). The model provides hourly forecasts at a 3
km resolution over Europe and the continental US. According to Windborne's chief product officer, Kai Marshland, WeatherMesh 6 is as accurate five days out as traditional forecasts are one day before, particularly in predicting surface temperatures. The company operates approximately 400 weather balloons from 15 sites, which supply sensor data to its models. This development highlights a shift from traditional, physics-based numerical weather prediction to AI-driven approaches that offer faster processing times.
