Optum Rx, the pharmacy benefit manager under UnitedHealth Group, has announced a transition to a more transparent pricing model. This new approach will move away from traditional models that rely on manufacturer pricing or prescription volume, opting
instead for a fee-based structure. Clients will now experience monthly, clearly defined fees per member, enhancing transparency. The model will eliminate spread pricing and similar practices, with Optum's group purchasing organization shifting to flat service fees by the end of the next year. Additionally, Optum Rx is launching digital tools like ShopMyScript and Price Wise to provide real-time pricing information and cost breakdowns, helping members make informed decisions before reaching the pharmacy counter.
