What's Happening?
Security Matters (SMX) and the European Center of Innovative Textiles (CETI) have introduced a new sustainability tool designed for the non-woven and fiber industries. This tool incorporates audit-proof traceability directly into the material, allowing
fibers and non-woven materials to be tracked from raw input to end-of-life through permanent, verifiable data. The technology uses a chemical-based marker embedded in the fibers, creating a tamper-proof profile that remains throughout the lifecycle. This marker can be read with detector devices and is linked to a secure, blockchain-enabled digital platform for real-time authentication and verification. CETI independently validates the data and provides post-processing detection to ensure traceability remains intact even through industrial processing. This technology is crucial for the textile industry, especially with upcoming regulations like the European Union's Digital Product Passport, which mandates clothing and footwear to have a scannable code detailing sustainability and material information.
Why It's Important?
The introduction of this traceability tool is significant for the textile industry as it addresses growing demands for sustainability and transparency. With regulations such as the European Union's Digital Product Passport becoming mandatory, brands need solutions that ensure compliance without disrupting existing production systems. The technology provides verified recycled content and regulatory compliance support, enhancing supply chain transparency and reducing fraud risk. It also aids producers in improving sorting for higher-value recycling outcomes, facilitating faster audits and reducing administrative burdens. This development is a step forward in meeting circularity goals and building consumer trust in sustainable fabrics, which is increasingly important in the face of environmental concerns and ethical sourcing demands.
