What's Happening?
The Denver Summit shattered the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) attendance record by drawing 63,004 fans to their match against the Washington Spirit at Empower Field at Mile High. This game marked the Summit's first home match in Colorado after
playing their initial three games on the road. The match ended in a scoreless draw. Denver was awarded the 16th NWSL franchise in January 2025, with the Summit and Boston Legacy starting play this season. The team plans to move to a new stadium in downtown Denver by 2028.
Why It's Important?
The record-breaking attendance highlights the growing popularity and support for women's soccer in the United States. It signifies a milestone for the NWSL and women's sports, demonstrating a strong fan base and potential for further growth. The establishment of a dedicated women's soccer stadium in Denver reflects the league's commitment to expanding its presence and providing better facilities for teams and fans. This development could encourage more investment and interest in women's sports, promoting gender equality in athletics.
