What's Happening?
Disney+ has begun production on 'The Koreans', a reimagining of FX's acclaimed series 'The Americans'. Starring Lee Byunghun and Han Jimin, the series is set in early 1990s South Korea during a period of democratization and cultural change. The plot centers
on a middle-class family harboring a secret: the parents are North Korean spies. The series will explore themes of patriotism, loyalty, and identity as a Korean counterintelligence agent closes in on them. The show is directed by Ahn Gilho and adapted by Park Eunkyo, with streaming set for Disney+ internationally and Hulu in the U.S.
Why It's Important?
This adaptation underscores the global appeal of espionage dramas and the cultural exchange between Western and Asian media. By setting the story in South Korea, 'The Koreans' offers a fresh perspective on the Cold War-era themes of 'The Americans', potentially attracting a diverse audience. The series also reflects Disney+'s strategy to expand its Korean content, tapping into the growing popularity of Korean dramas worldwide. This move could enhance Disney+'s competitive edge in the streaming market, particularly in Asia.
