What's Happening?
Artur Beterbiev, a former undisputed light heavyweight world champion, has expressed his opinion that Islam Makhachev, the current UFC welterweight title holder, has surpassed the achievements of former lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov. Beterbiev noted that Makhachev's accomplishment of becoming a two-division champion sets him apart, despite Khabib's undefeated record. Makhachev recently won the UFC welterweight title by defeating Jack Della Maddalena in November 2025. Khabib retired with a perfect record of 29 wins, last fighting in October 2020 against Justin Gaethje.
Why It's Important?
Beterbiev's comments contribute to the ongoing debate about the legacies of top fighters in the UFC, particularly between Makhachev and Nurmagomedov, who are both prominent
figures in the sport. This discussion is significant as it influences public perception and the historical ranking of fighters. For Makhachev, being compared favorably to Khabib by a respected figure like Beterbiev can enhance his reputation and marketability. The conversation also highlights the evolving nature of MMA, where fighters are increasingly achieving success across multiple weight classes, setting new standards for excellence.
