What's Happening?
Century Aluminum Company has expressed support for the U.S. Supreme Court's decision regarding tariffs imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). The company aligns with President Trump's trade policies, which include the IEEPA tariffs and Section 232 steel and aluminum tariffs. These policies have facilitated Century Aluminum's expansion of U.S. aluminum production, including increasing output at its Mt. Holly, S.C. smelter and planning a new smelter in Inola, Oklahoma. The company is the largest producer of aluminum in the U.S., smelting nearly 60% of the country's primary aluminum.
Why It's Important?
The Supreme Court's decision and Century Aluminum's response highlight the ongoing impact of trade policies on the U.S. manufacturing
sector. By supporting tariffs, Century Aluminum aims to protect domestic industries from foreign competition, potentially leading to job creation and economic growth. The company's expansion plans could significantly boost U.S. aluminum production capacity, reinforcing the country's industrial base. This development underscores the importance of trade policies in shaping the competitive landscape for American manufacturers.
