What's Happening?
Openreach has introduced a new safety app designed to protect its engineers from abuse while on the job. Developed in partnership with Peoplesafe, the app includes features such as an SOS button, fall
alarm, GPS tracking, and direct police dispatch. The app aims to address the increasing incidents of physical and verbal abuse faced by engineers, including racially motivated attacks. Openreach recorded 700 such incidents since April last year. The app will be mandatory for field engineers and optional for office staff, providing an added layer of safety and support.
Why It's Important?
The launch of this app underscores the growing concern over workplace safety, particularly for field workers who often operate alone. By leveraging technology to enhance safety measures, Openreach is taking proactive steps to protect its employees, which could set a precedent for other companies facing similar challenges. This initiative highlights the importance of corporate responsibility in ensuring employee well-being and could influence industry standards for worker safety. Additionally, addressing workplace abuse can improve employee morale and retention, ultimately benefiting the company's operational efficiency.
