What's Happening?
Katarina Senabu, the 2025 National Woman Spice Farmer of the Year, shared her insights on succeeding in agriculture at the Women in Primary Industries Symposium 2026 in Suva. Senabu, who operates a successful five-acre integrated farm in Koronivia, emphasized
the importance of starting small, managing time effectively, and committing to hard work. Her farm combines vegetable farming, hydroponics, and tilapia fishponds, producing food and income year-round. Senabu's story was highlighted as part of the symposium's focus on empowering women in agriculture, supported by the World Bank ENABLE Program. Chief Agricultural Economist Sainiana Kirisitiana noted the broader benefits of empowering women farmers, including improved food security and poverty reduction.
Why It's Important?
The symposium and Senabu's story underscore the critical role women play in agriculture and the potential for economic growth and sustainability when they are empowered. By highlighting successful female farmers, the event aims to inspire more women to enter and thrive in the agricultural sector. Empowering women in agriculture can lead to significant improvements in food security and poverty alleviation, as women often reinvest in their communities. The event also aligns with global efforts to promote gender equality and sustainable development, recognizing that women's participation is essential for achieving these goals.
