What's Happening?
Maria Belafonte, granddaughter of the renowned civil rights activist Harry Belafonte, is making her feature directorial debut with the film 'Pockets of Heaven'. The movie stars Brandon Wilson, Alfre Woodard, and rapper Mavi, among others. Set against
the backdrop of a Los Angeles wildfire evacuation, the narrative follows three young individuals from different backgrounds: a privileged runaway from rehab and two unhoused 20-somethings. The film delves into themes of love, addiction, and survival as their lives intersect in the burn zone. The project, co-written by Belafonte and Alexander Zeke Musca, completed principal photography in December in Los Angeles. It is produced by Sofie Hubbard Warshafsky and Glia Productions, with executive production by Gina Belafonte and Jason Wiesenfeld.
Why It's Important?
The film 'Pockets of Heaven' is significant as it addresses pressing social issues such as homelessness and addiction, set against the increasingly relevant context of climate-induced disasters like wildfires. By highlighting these themes, the film aims to foster a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by marginalized communities in urban settings. The involvement of organizations like Help USA and The People Concern underscores a commitment to authentic representation and community engagement. This project not only marks a significant step in Maria Belafonte's career but also contributes to the ongoing dialogue about social justice and environmental issues in the U.S.
What's Next?
Post-production for 'Pockets of Heaven' is expected to be completed by the summer of 2026.
