What's Happening?
The Basketball Tournament (TBT) has announced a two-year extension of its media rights deal with Fox Sports, which will broadcast 20 games across Fox, FS1, and FS2. This includes the $2 million winner-take-all championship game scheduled for August 2. TBT is revamping
its format for its 13th edition, moving from a 64-team single-elimination tournament to a 16-team competition split into two brackets. The first bracket will feature eight alumni teams from universities such as Kentucky and Syracuse, with matchups based on historic rivalries. The second bracket will consist of eight non-alumni teams competing in Las Vegas. The winners of each bracket will face off in the championship game at the home gym of the Alumni Bracket champion.
Why It's Important?
The extension of the media rights deal with Fox Sports signifies the continued interest and viability of TBT as a summer basketball event. By securing a broadcast partner like Fox, TBT ensures a wide audience reach, which is crucial for maintaining and growing its fan base. The new format aims to capitalize on existing college basketball rivalries, potentially increasing viewer engagement and attendance. This strategic shift could enhance the tournament's appeal, drawing in fans who are eager for competitive basketball during the offseason. The success of last year's championship game, which saw a significant increase in viewership, underscores the potential for growth under the new format.
What's Next?
With the new format in place, TBT will focus on executing the tournament and engaging fans through its revamped structure. The success of the alumni and non-alumni brackets will be closely watched to assess the impact of these changes on viewership and fan engagement. Fox Sports will likely leverage its platforms to promote the tournament, aiming to build on the increased viewership from previous years. The outcome of this year's tournament could influence future format decisions and media partnerships, as TBT seeks to solidify its position in the summer sports landscape.
