The NASA Standard Initiator (NSI), produced by Chemring Energetic Devices in Downer's Grove, has been awarded the title of the 2026 Coolest Thing Made in Illinois. This pyrotechnic device, used in NASA's Artemis II/Orion Mission, was selected through
public voting in the Makers Madness contest hosted by the Illinois Manufacturers’ Association. The NSI, an electrically activated pyrotechnic device, played a crucial role in the Artemis II mission, helping propel the spacecraft further into space. The contest celebrates the innovation and creativity of Illinois manufacturers, with the NSI emerging as the winner from an initial field of 100 product nominations.
