What's Happening?
The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) has released a report titled 'Cruising for Impact,' which details the significant economic contributions of the cruise tourism sector. According to the report, cruise tourism added $98.5 billion to the global
GDP in 2024 and generated a total economic output of $199 billion. The industry supported 1.8 million jobs and provided $60.1 billion in wages worldwide. The report emphasizes the sector's role in supporting both direct and indirect employment, with more than 1.4 million jobs supported onshore in various sectors such as hospitality, transportation, and retail. The WTTC advocates for integrating cruise tourism into national development strategies to ensure inclusive and sustainable growth.
Why It's Important?
The economic impact of cruise tourism is substantial, affecting various stakeholders, including local businesses and communities in port destinations. The report highlights that $93 billion in direct cruise-related spending benefits local economies, supporting small businesses and micro-economies. This spending helps sustain long-term tourism demand and employment. The WTTC's emphasis on collaboration between destinations, communities, and industry partners aims to ensure that the growth of cruise tourism is inclusive and sustainable. The projected 19% increase in cruise passenger capacity by 2028 suggests that the sector will continue to play a crucial role in supporting economic development and job creation.
What's Next?
The WTTC encourages governments and industry leaders to align the anticipated growth in cruise tourism with long-term social value. This involves focusing on local sourcing, skills development, and community partnerships to ensure that the benefits of cruise tourism are widely shared. The report suggests that integrating cruise tourism into national development strategies can help achieve these goals, promoting sustainable and inclusive growth in the sector.
