What's Happening?
Salad Days, a hydroponic grower, has inaugurated a 68,000-square-foot controlled-environment agriculture facility in Flora, Mississippi. The facility, which uses advanced Prospiant greenhouse systems and FGM moving-table automation, is designed to produce
up to 3 million heads of lettuce annually. This expansion allows Salad Days to transition from a niche grower to a regional supplier, meeting the increasing demand from chefs and retailers across the Southeast. The facility will supply hydroponic lettuce varieties year-round to customers in Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, Tennessee, Alabama, and Florida. The project received support from various local and state entities, including the Mississippi Development Authority and the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Why It's Important?
The opening of this facility marks a significant step in the expansion of controlled-environment agriculture in the Southeast. By increasing production capacity, Salad Days can better meet the growing demand for fresh, pesticide-free produce, which is increasingly sought after by consumers and businesses alike. This development not only strengthens Mississippi's position in agricultural innovation but also supports local economies by creating jobs and fostering economic growth. The facility's ability to produce lettuce year-round ensures a stable supply chain, reducing dependency on seasonal production and imports.
What's Next?
With the facility now operational, Salad Days plans to continue shipping its products daily to various foodservice distributors and grocery chains. The company may explore further expansion opportunities to increase its market reach and product offerings. Additionally, the success of this facility could encourage other agricultural businesses to invest in similar technologies, promoting sustainable farming practices across the region.
