What's Happening?
Five high school students from the Los Angeles area have been awarded the prestigious Evans Scholarship, which covers full housing and tuition costs for college. The scholarship is granted to students who have demonstrated excellence in caddying, along
with strong academic performance, financial need, and exceptional character. The recipients, including Amaia Diaz and Marley Gomez from St. Mary’s Academy, Joel Arriaga Lopez and Sara Mejia from Compton Early College High, and Cesar Sierra from Salesian, participated in summer training in Illinois. The Western Golf Association Caddie Academy supports this initiative, which has seen over 12,000 graduates since its inception in 1930.
Why It's Important?
The Evans Scholarship provides significant financial relief to students who might otherwise struggle to afford higher education. By rewarding caddying skills, the program highlights the value of discipline, patience, and responsibility, qualities that are essential for personal and professional success. This initiative not only supports educational advancement but also promotes the sport of golf and its associated values. The scholarship's impact extends beyond the individual recipients, as it encourages other students to pursue similar opportunities, fostering a culture of hard work and dedication.
