What's Happening?
Associated British Ports (ABP) is seeking early contractor engagement for its £500 million Solent Gateway 2 project in Marchwood, near Southampton. The project aims to enhance maritime capacity with new
berths, logistics buildings, and improved transport links. ABP plans to appoint a contractor to assist with design and statutory processes, with the potential to deliver the main construction phase. The project supports ABP's net zero goals and may include renewable energy infrastructure. The site will be operated jointly with the Ministry of Defence, and the project is classified as a Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project.
Why It's Important?
The Solent Gateway 2 project represents a significant investment in the UK's maritime infrastructure, with potential benefits for both commercial and defense sectors. By enhancing port capacity and integrating renewable energy solutions, the project aligns with broader sustainability goals. The development could stimulate economic growth in the region, create jobs, and improve logistics efficiency. However, the project's success depends on careful planning and execution, as well as collaboration between public and private stakeholders.
What's Next?
ABP plans to shortlist three bidders by April 2026, with a paid innovation competition phase running through September 2026. The selected contractor will enter a pre-construction agreement, with the main build contract potentially awarded under NEC terms. The development consent order is expected to be secured in 2028, with construction potentially running from 2026 to 2031. Stakeholders will need to navigate regulatory processes and ensure alignment with environmental and community interests.
