Rio Tinto has partnered with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to enhance its copper extraction process, known as Nuton, which is operational at Gunnison Copper's Johnson Camp mine in the United States. This process uses micro-organisms to recover copper that is otherwise difficult or costly to extract. AWS will not only provide data and analytics services to optimize this process but will also be the first customer to purchase the copper produced, using it in components for its U.S. data centers. The collaboration aims to improve the efficiency of the Nuton process by simulating performance and feeding advanced analytics into decision systems, thereby optimizing acid and water use and improving copper recovery predictions.
