What's Happening?
Lithuanian-born artist Žilvinas Balkevičius is set to open a new exhibition titled 'Icelandic Metamorphoses' at Listasalur Mosfellsbæjar on May 30. The exhibition features sculptures made from Icelandic stone
and sand, exploring themes of transformation in nature and the relationship between people and the environment. Balkevičius, who has lived in Iceland since 2007, draws inspiration from the country's unique landscape and geological forces. His work combines natural materials with stainless steel, highlighting contrasts between permanence and movement, as well as natural and industrial forms. The opening event will include a public reception with light refreshments.
Why It's Important?
This exhibition underscores the cultural and artistic significance of Iceland's natural environment. By using local materials shaped by volcanic activity, ice, wind, and erosion, Balkevičius's work offers a unique perspective on the interplay between nature and human creativity. The exhibition not only celebrates Iceland's geological heritage but also invites viewers to reflect on broader environmental themes. It highlights the role of art in fostering a deeper understanding of ecological processes and the impact of human activity on the natural world.
