What's Happening?
Irma Garcia, a 72-year-old grandmother of eight, has graduated with a bachelor's degree from George Mason University's Schar School of Policy and Government. Garcia, who moved from Puerto Rico to the U.S. in the 1970s, pursued her education while raising
three daughters as a single mother. She utilized George Mason University's senior tuition waiver program to complete her degree, emphasizing the importance of lifelong learning and educational access for women of color.
Why It's Important?
Garcia's achievement highlights the potential for educational institutions to support non-traditional students, particularly older adults and women of color, in achieving their academic goals. Her story underscores the value of programs that provide financial and logistical support to those who may have faced barriers to education earlier in life. By sharing her journey, Garcia aims to inspire others to pursue their educational aspirations, regardless of age or circumstance.
