What's Happening?
WeWereMonkeys, a Vernon-based video game studio, has received a $50,000 grant from Creative BC's Video Games Early Stage Growth program. This funding is part of a $300,000 initiative aimed at supporting six emerging video game companies in British Columbia.
WeWereMonkeys is currently developing 'The Death of Akina,' a dark action-adventure game set on a planet devastated by a technological god. The studio, founded in 2008, is known for its narrative-driven digital media and has previously worked on projects for Taylor Swift and Of Monsters and Men. The grant will assist in prototyping, design, and production, as well as hiring local talent and enhancing technical infrastructure.
Why It's Important?
The funding from Creative BC is crucial for early-stage studios like WeWereMonkeys, providing the financial support needed to develop creative intellectual property and compete in the global video game market. This initiative not only aids in the growth of individual companies but also strengthens the broader video game industry in British Columbia, fostering innovation and job creation. By supporting local talent and encouraging the development of unique games, the program contributes to the cultural and economic vitality of the region, positioning B.C. as a hub for creative digital media.
