What's Happening?
Art Basel has launched a new initiative called 'Basel Exclusive' to encourage galleries to withhold artworks from pre-fair sales, aiming to enhance in-person discovery at the event. This move comes as part of efforts to curb the trend of PDF pre-sales.
The initiative has seen participation from 170 of the 232 exhibitors at the Swiss event. Additionally, the Volta fair will return to Basel with a curated selection of affordable artworks, targeting younger collectors. These changes reflect a strategic shift in how art fairs engage with audiences and collectors.
Why It's Important?
The 'Basel Exclusive' initiative represents a significant shift in the art market, emphasizing the importance of physical presence and direct engagement with art. By limiting pre-sales, Art Basel aims to enhance the visitor experience and potentially increase sales during the event. This approach could influence other art fairs and galleries, encouraging a return to traditional exhibition models. The focus on affordable art at Volta also highlights a growing trend towards democratizing art ownership, appealing to a broader demographic and fostering new collector bases.
