What's Happening?
South Africa's International Emmy-nominated production house Both Worlds and Paris-based Paradoxal have secured exclusive rights to adapt two of Deon Meyer's bestselling novels into premium TV series. The adaptations include 'Umzingeli' ('The Hunter'),
a contemporary spy thriller featuring Thobela 'Tiny' Mpayipheli, a KGB- and Stasi-trained assassin. The series will span multiple locations, including Bordeaux, Bilbao, and Berlin, and is designed as a character-driven action-thriller. Another adaptation, 'Dead at Daybreak,' is a noir series set in 1996 Cape Town, focusing on Zatopek van Heerden, a former cop turned private investigator. Both projects aim to capture Meyer's unique storytelling, which blends local and universal themes.
Why It's Important?
The adaptation of Deon Meyer's novels into TV series highlights the growing international interest in diverse storytelling and the global appeal of South African literature. These adaptations could enhance the visibility of South African narratives on the global stage, potentially leading to increased interest in the country's cultural and literary output. The collaboration between Both Worlds and Paradoxal also underscores the trend of cross-border partnerships in the entertainment industry, which can lead to richer, more varied content offerings. This development may influence other production houses to explore similar international collaborations.
